What Are SEDBUK Ratings & What Do They Mean?

By John Lawless @BestHeatingUK

Are you looking to replace an old, tired boiler or buy a new one? If the answer is yes, you’ll want to get familiar with SEDBUK ratings and how they affect your home’s heating.

What is SEDBUK?

SEDBUK stands for Seasonal Efficiency of Domestic Boilers in the UK, and it’s a great way of seeing, at a glance, how efficient a boiler is and exactly what you’re getting for your money!

This simple rating system was first introduced in 1999, by boiler manufacturers and the government. Since it’s introduction, the system has been used in SAP assessments (that’s the UK Governments method of measuring the energy efficiency of a house), and as part of building regulations. The details of the scheme were last updated way back in the heady days of 2005.

The system rates boilers on their efficiency, on a scale of A-G.

Boilers ranked in band A are the most efficient, while band G boilers are the worst for efficiency. When buying a boiler, it is important to note the SEDBUK rating, as it will indicate just how efficiently the boiler will run.

The ratings are based on the typical annual efficiency achieved in domestic settings. This takes into account climate conditions, estimated usage patterns, amongst a whole host of other factors.
