Weekly Marketing Skinny • May 23, 2015

Posted on the 23 May 2015 by Ana Hoffman @AnaTrafficCafe

Don’t have the time to read all the marketing news, blog posts, announcements, and other content related to SEO/social media/online marketing published each week?

I’ve got you covered.

I sift through trillions (well, hundreds) of online publications to stay on top of marketing news that might affect your online business.

And I package them neatly in bite-sized chunks in my Weekly Marketing Skinnies right here at Traffic Generation Café every Saturday morning.

Between you and me, I have no idea why I bother investing hours of my time weekly reading all these marketing news just to boil them down for you in my Weekly Marketing Skinnies, other than the fact that I know you don’t have the time to keep up with the fast-paced marketing industry on your own, yet you DO need to be in-the-know to remain competitive.

Plus, your enthusiastic comments and social media shares show me just how much you truly appreciate being kept in the marketing loop in just a few minutes per week.

If you appreciate what I do, share this Marketing Skinny:

THANK YOU.

Now grab your cup of coffee and let’s catch up on the marketing news that matter to your business.

Search

The Quality Update: Google confirms changing how content quality is assessed, resulting in huge rankings shake-up.

Google has a new head of web spam, but not the “New Matt Cutts”.

Google has issued an apology for showing the White House in Maps search results when people search for a specific racial slur. Variations of the phrase deliver the same results.

Google Webmaster Tools are now Google Search Console.

Google doesn’t use analytics/bounce rate in search rankings.

Google’s Gary Illyes said “User experience will never be more important than content.”

Google to launch buy buttons on its search-results pages in coming weeks.

The Google-Twitter Firehose deal goes LIVE.

Google made it harder to reach Google.com from outside the US.

Bing is testing Answer Boxes that show the contents of entire Wikipedia sections and pages right in their search results.

Bing has announced they will be introducing their own version of mobile friendly ranking signals in the upcoming months.

Social Media

Ha! Zuckerberg to SMBs: Facebook Pages are still the best way to reach consumers.

Facebook Messenger will now offer context about people wanting to chat with you.

New Facebook feature for local business advertisers: ‘Call Now’ button.

Facebook officially announced Instant Stories – that’s what FB dubbed their new product for publishers that allows FB to host mobile content vs redirecting users to external links.

What’s a ‘video view’? On Facebook, only 3 seconds vs 30 at YouTube.

“How many of Facebook’s video views are engaged views?” Google’s advertising chief Sridhar Ramaswamy questioned the value of Facebook video, when the social network counts views after only three seconds of attention.

YouTube “How To” video searches are up 70%.

90% of Twitter video views happen on a mobile device.

Twitter is rolling out its new desktop search interface for all logged-in users.

President Barack Obama is now on Twitter. Officially.

Loved this… The lighthearted Twitter banter between Obama and former President Bill Clinton.

You can now avoid accidental tweets to the wrong account with TweetDeck.

Pinterest and Tumblr were the fastest-growing social networks over the past year.

Google+ Ripples feature is a goner.
