Weekend Walkabout / Sundays in My City: Squire’s Castle

By Zen_sheila @BeZensational
It’s Weekend Walkabout over at KB’s Room and Sundays in My City at Unknown Mami’s.

Nestled in the woods of North Chagrin Reservation in Wickliffe, Ohio you will find Squire’s Castle. This beautiful old Euclid Bluestone castle was built by Feargus Squire who came to America at age 10 and became an office boy for an oil company. Mr. Squire went on to build his own refinery and in 1885 co-managed Standard Oil with John D. Rockefeller. He was also Mayor of the city in which the castle resides.

Although this castle was originally intended to be a gatekeepers lodge, the Squire’s used it as a weekend retreat. Legend tells that this castle is haunted. Stories tell of Mrs. Squire (in life) roaming the house at nighttime while using a red lantern to light her way. One day she slipped, broke her neck, and died. Another story suggests that she was frightened literally to death by one of the stuffed/mounted animal heads above the fireplace. One of the main reasons we decided to tour this castle was because of the haunting tales. My fresh batteries died completely upon entering the castle and we had to take turns trying to get shots with our other cameras. After we got back into the car… my camera was fully juiced and worked just fine.
