Most people think of Christmas as a cold-weather holiday – sledding, skiing, snow and lots more cozy. But where I’m from, tis not so. I grew up in Florida and every season since moving to the north, I have come home to celebrate. Spending this time of year in a warmer and a sunnier region has always felt odd, and as I’ve grown older, it has become comical. Because Floridians don’t experience the traditional Christmas, they make up for it with humorous extremes – too many palm-tree lights, starfish tree toppers, Santas in shorts and seashell ornaments. I make it a point to document the tackiness because… why not?
I flew into Ft. Lauderdale on Tuesday and left on Sunday. I take advantage of my time off during Christmas because for the most part, it’s a global holiday. Unlike Thanksgiving, Easter or Boxing day, which are national, almost everyone in the world steps away from work on Christmas. Most of my time was spent with my family doing a whole lot of not a lot. My brother, always a funny one, was ever so close to giving me the book, Sewing for Dummies, as a gift. While it’s always a good idea to brush up on basics, thanks but no thanks Gerrit! I also spent a lot of time scouring the online fabric and pattern stores, scheming my next project. I’m sure you did the same. Come on, admit it! Last, but certainly not least, I became obsessed with my families newest furry friend; I might have adopted my own. Uh oh! Stay tuned!
