We Call It Bara Bazaar

The wholesale market of Shillong, or what we locally call as “Bara Bazaar” is one of the busiest, nosiest and dirtiest places of the town. A well-groomed gentleman entering the place comes out as though he has returned from a war. And during the monsoons, things just become twice as worse. It is a place where no man loves to come, and yet, every man just has to. This is the market from where goods of all kinds including fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, grocery items, stationery items, and every other item is distributed to retailers all around the town. Therefore, most people prefer coming here and buying items as they get things at a much cheaper rate. The entire market is basically a labyrinth of narrow lanes with small shops on either side, and one could easily get lost here. It is a place that is swarming with all kinds of life. Vendors shouting, people chit-chatting, coolies carrying goods, kids crying, etc. In short, an epicenter of total chaos and definitely not a very peaceful place to be in. But yet, it is the life of our little town.

“‎The simple truth is that you can understand a town.
You can know and love and hate it.
You can blame it, resent it, and nothing changes.
In the end, you’re just another part of it.”

~ Brenna Yovanoff

when you don’t know what you’re doing,
someone else does.”

Just direct your feet, to the sunny side of the street.”

“Experience is by far the best teacher.
You know, ever since I was a little girl I knew that
if you look both ways when you cross the street,
you’ll see a lot more than traffic.”
~ Mae West

“All great deeds and all great thoughts have a ridiculous beginning.
Great works are often born on a street corner
or in a restaurant’s revolving door.”

I met a man who had no feet.”
