In the last century, an American tourist heard that a renowned Polish rabbi, Hofetz Chaim, lived in the area where he was traveling.
A great admirer of Rabbi Chaim, he asked if he might be able to visit him at his home. Word came back from the rabbi that he was welcome to stop by at any time.
The excited young tourist arrived at the rabbi’s home and was invited to take off his knapsack and come inside.
He entered the doorway and found a simple one-room lodging filled with books. The furnishings were limited to a table, a lamp, and a cot.
The tourist asked in amazement, “Rabbi, where is the rest of your furniture?” Hofetz Chaim replied, “Where is yours?”
The puzzled American replied, glancing out the door at his knapsack “My furniture? But I’m only a visitor here.” The Rabbi responded, “So am I.”
Often it is when we empty ourselves not only of our pride, but also of the possessions in which we pride ourselves, that we truly can find those things that will last for eternity.
It is impossible to grasp hold of Heaven and earth with the same outstretched hand.
(This found in a calendar book from years ago with no author given) – and it reminds me that we are visitors here on this planet – and what an adventure we’re having – or at least some of us are and I’m assuming you!
Think about when you visit a place – you’re on vacation and you want to see everything, do everything and experience all the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the place –
What if you lived like a visitor in your own life now – today? How would you experience it differently?
Why not do that today – be a visitor, look at your life with new eyes and see how it alters your life.
