Denzel Washington won his first ever Screen Actors Guild Award on last night for his portrayal of Troy Maxon in the August Wilson big screen adaptation of the stage play Fences. During his acceptance speech the actor/director told the audience that he was a God fearing man, that was suppose to have faith, but didn’t have faith, referencing the fact that he didn’t think he would win.
“I’m a God-fearing man. I’m supposed to have faith, but I didn’t have faith, God bless you all, all the other actors. I said ‘you know that young boy is going to win, Denzel, you ain’t gonna win’ so I didn’t even prepare, but I am prepared!” he said much to the audiences jubilation.
Washington, having previously been nominated six times by the SAG-AFTRA, gave special recognition to the actors who work so hard but often get overlooked in the bright lights of Hollywood.
