Warning! - A New George Bush Is Coming (This photo of George P. Bush is by Gage Skidmore.)
I post this as a warning to voters and intelligent people across this country -- there is a new George Bush entering politics. It is George Prescott Bush (nephew of George W. Bush and son of Jeb Bush). He recently moved back to Texas because he thinks it will be easier to kick-start his political career here -- and he's probably right about that, since Texas is about as red as a state can get (and too many Texans don't think knowledge and competence are requirements for elective office).
This new Bush has never held any elective office before, but he doesn't want to start small (with an attempt at a local or legislative race). He's running for statewide elective office as Texas Land Commissioner -- showing he wants to climb the political ladder quickly. And his chances look good. He doesn't have a Republican opponent in the primary -- and as of right now, no Democrat has expressed a desire to run for that office.
I wish I could say that this new generation Bush was at least a little bit smarter than the last generation proved to be, but he's not. He supported Ted Cruz for Senate in the last primary and general election. And now he's shown he will follow the GOP party line, even if it hurts millions of Americans. In a speech to the Metrocrest Chamber of Commerce in Addison last Wednesday, Bush announced that he would like to see the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) defunded. He said:
“It’s a monstrosity of a law. In terms of defunding it, that would be one way to reduce and mitigate the impact it’s going to have on practicing physicians and hospitals here in Texas.”
“I agree with this effort to defund it, or keep Texas out of the program unless we can modify it to a Texas-specific solution.”
I almost feel like we Texans owe the rest of this nation an apology, since it looks like we're about to give another Bush a start in politics (and one who may be even worse than his father and uncle). Hopefully, you voters in other states will make sure he never ascends to national office (like his uncle), restricting the damage he does to Texas alone.
