Welcome back to Wandering Wednesdays on Bewildered Bug! Every few Wednesdays, as I explore my surroundings, I'm going to post something about the area that I find awesome, inspiring, funny .... something to help me appreciate my surroundings more and something to show you what beauty there is all around you and to introduce you to the beauty in other parts of the world wherever you may be!
I haven't done a Wandering Wednesday post in a long, long time so I think we are about due, am I right? On my last Wandering Wednesday I took you on a little Christmas Walk around a beautiful area in London and this time I'm taking you a bit further north to the City of York!
A few weekends ago I was given the opportunity to go on a solo mini-break - so I chose to take a train to York and to explore for two days! You know those periods of your life in which you just need a break? I was tired...just so freaking tired of my job, of my life, of the food I was eating...even of the clothes I was wearing. It was time for a break - a little step away from my normality just to reset...and luckily, thanks to #bloggerlodge, I was able to have a spectacularly relaxing weekend in the city with a warm, comfortable room at the excellently located Travelodge Central.
Now the last time that I was in York, it was for a few hours with the Luv Luv and my Mom...and at the time the Luv Luv was starving and grumpy and my Mom was a bit angry with the Luv Luv. Needless to say, I didn't get to do as much wandering as I would have liked - at least, not until after we ate. We parked up by the train station, found our way up a high street and ate at Nando's...then just wandered and eventually found (as one does in York) Yorkminster and the York Museum gardens. Then we walked along the wall back to the train station and went back to Manchester where we were staying. That little taste, however was enough for me to want to go back...and I'm glad I did.
York is so full of history that no matter where you are in the city centre, you can see an ancient monument or building just around the corner. It gave me a bit of nostalgia, not because I have a relationship with York, but because it reminded me of one of my favourite Canadian areas, Old Montréal. They are both historic cities that have preserved much of their original atmosphere while housing contemporary stores, hotels and restaurants. They are both designed to allow the user a modified experience of what they may have been back in the ancient times and they are both absolutely beautiful.
So I've managed to choose a few of the photos from my trip for you to peruse - and no, it was not easy...not only is York that gorgeous, but I had the opportunity to try my new DSLR - even though I used it on automatic - the quality of the photos are awesome! I have even more on my phone - especially from day 2 (because the DSLR was HEAVY on my neck I didn't carry it (any suggestions how to alleviate this?)....and trust me to discover the more picturesque things than the first day when I did not have my camera on me!) Anyway, I hope you enjoy the photos. Where should I wander next?
And finally, the famous Yorkminster front facade! I tried to sketch the central window - did not come out very well so NO I'm not sharing 😛 I did want to point this out to you though - do you notice the amount of hearts in the motifs on the Yorkminster facade? No wonder they say that your heart remains in York!
