Walking Dead Costume Designer Talks Zombie Clothes
Have you ever wondered what kind of stuff they use to dress up those zombies in The Walking Dead? Well, I couldn't even imagine because I always knew that there's got to be more than just ketchup and dirty clothes involved as those creepy zombies always looked so realistic and scary.
The Walking Dead's costume designer Eulyn Hufkie-Womble has shared some details on how they make those Zombies look so real for the show, in a Q&A session with Fancy Dress Costumes. Eulyn talks about how they use smell good aging products, sweat that's good for the skin and different kinds of costumes for each and every zombie in the AMC's hit drama.
According to Eulyn, The Walking Dead cast love dirty costumes. "We call it ‘sexy dirty’. The clothing is good quality, just made to look old and dirty. Our aging products smell good. And our ‘sweat’ is a combination of oils that are good for the skin."
"A lot of work goes into every costume piece. We shred, dye and then paint. We’ve created different colours of paint that resemble decayed matter. There’s puss, vomit… well you get the picture…"
She also says that sometimes "It can be" difficult to repeat outfits on zombies. "There’s the ‘suit guy’, ‘student guy’, ‘farm girl’, ‘church girl’, ‘secretary’. We try not to make these ‘uniforms’ as I call them, but it’s inevitable. If you were to walk outside right now and actually count the number of people wearing jeans, you’d be amazed."

"Shane had 20 brown long-sleeved tops in the [season two] episode where he and Rick fight," said Eulyn.  And apparently she was the one who came up with the idea for the old-school poncho for Daryl. "Norman was so keen on wearing one that we incorporated it into his wardrobe for season three. He loves it! We call it his ‘blankie’…"
