Using Art in Home Interior Design

By Simone Design Blog @HomeSpire

Hello everyone.

How was your weekend? For me, it was a weekend for cleaning up after a big home-repair project. We had to repair our hallway ceiling due to a leaky pipe. Christopher was the handyman of choice–he’s done so many home repairs over the years that he’s pretty good at it now. During the two weeks of repair I was breathing in drywall dust and paint fumes. It’s so nice to at last have a home that’s dust free (somewhat) and that has fresh flowers around the house. I missed that.

The finishing touch to any room decorating is using art in your home interior design plans.

When decorating your room, the tendency is to concentrate all your focus on furnishings, accessories and paint colors. There’s one important part of our equation that we often forget to include in our interior design renovation, and that is the decoration of our wall. When this happens, there’s an empty wall just begging for attention. Walls are great places to display pieces of art, whether they be sculptures or paintings.

When you add some art to your wall, it has an immediate impact because it reflects your character and your individual taste. Also, it adds more colors to your wall. Finally, it’s a great conversation starter for friends, family and other guests as they enter your room.

Art shouldn’t be purchased on a whim–it should be something you think about first. You want to make sure the colors and the style suit the theme you want to create in the space you’re decorating. Art often has a calming effect on people. In a painting, sometimes the effect comes from muted colors and other times from the softness of paint strokes. We spend hours in art galleries trying to understand and appreciate what the different artists are trying to express. So, it stands to reason we will do the same thing when choosing a piece(s) for our homes.

One of the more popular styles of art that homeowners favor is abstract. Today I’m going to focus on how abstract art is used in interior design.

I love how this painting just adds  bursts of color and warmth to this dining room. The many shades of brown tie in quite nicely with the wood furnishings. The painting gives the room some added warmth and color to an otherwise blank wall.

This is tres chic. The many colors just invite you into this space.

I really like the contrast of the purple color against the green.

The Rothko painting above the console is so eye-catching with the use of yellow against the green walls.

The windows, in my opinion, are the focal point in this room. The green in the artwork and on the cushions is a perfect way to use the colors of nature inside your home.

Isn’t this painting great? It features several colors from the same family.

Abstract art can also be nearly monochromatic. This painting almost appears like a blank canvass, but you can see just a hint of color. It’s so soothing to look at, don’t you think?

When choosing art, as when making any major decision for your home design, it’s important to also ask yourself “Can I live with this?”. As you can see, abstract art is all about color with totally different designs and shapes. It can work together with any type of interior design style you have in your home. As you can see, in all the rooms shown above, the painting completes the room and decor perfectly with its composition and display of soft lines.

I hope you enjoyed this visit to the “art gallery” and you are inspired to think about including art in your redecorating project. It’s worth the time and investment.

Have a great rest of your Monday,

Simone
