Urban Food Fest: Uruguay Came to London

By Clo Hutch @lashesoflife

A couple of Saturdays ago, I spent Saturday evening chilling and catching up with Kim at Urban Food Fest, over a glass of wine and some delicious food. The sun was out, and summer finally here, so it was great to have a girls evening outdoors.

The Saturday we were at Urban Food Fest was actually a takeover, by brand Bodega Garzon – A Uruguayan wine brand which was bringing the hillside scapes of Uruguay, to London’s Shoreditch.

There was a cool pop-up with fake grass, parasols, deck chairs and some awesome light up cube seats – they lit up different colours when it got darker in the evening. Kim and I sat on the edge of the area with a glass of wine in hand, taking in everything which was going on at the food festival.

The wine we tried first was the Bodega Garzon Albarino, which was light and refreshing, not too sweet or too dry. I did try a taste of the Viognier which was pretty nice too, but a little too dry for me. I didn’t try the red, with it finally being hot outside, I didn’t think it was quite the right choice for the weather for me.

After a couple of drinks, Kim and I started to get a little peckish, and went for a wander to check out what the different stalls had to offer. Urban Food Fest have a great selection of different street food traders every week, and the Saturday we were there saw Caribbean cuisine, slow cooked BBQ food, Acai bowls and ceviche, amongst the delicious dishes on offer.

But for us, we just had to try the Uruguayan food from the Bodega Garzon street food truck, as it looked and sounded delicious.

I opted for the Uruguayan prawn wrap and Kim chose the chivito. My wrap was absolutely delicious, the prawns fresh and juicy, the sauce a little creamy with a hint of garlic, all mixed with summer vegetables inside a soft tortilla wrap.

The chivito, a traditional Uruguayan steak sandwich, consisted of juicy, tender and flavoursome steak, with a tasty chimichurri sauce and peppers, all inside a floury ciabatta roll. Each bite was heavenly. I think the best sandwich I’d had.

We stayed for a little longer, soaking in the buzzy atmosphere, before heading off.

There’s a second takeover on August 20th, when Colinas de Uruguay will be bringing a fake beach to Urban Food Fest, but the Bodega Garzon food truck and wines are there every weekend until the end of August, so if you’re in need of some weekend plans make sure you pop along. You won’t be disappointed!
