Urban Decay Naked Skin Finishing Powder: Review + Pictures

By Joanna Koh

New kid on the block from the Urban Decay Naked Skin series, the Naked Skin Ultra Definition Pressed Finishing Powder is next evolution in Naked Skin. A silky weightless finishing powder with a luminous demi-matte finish, it complements the other Naked Skin products and leaves your skin looking as naturally flawless.

Designed to be virtually invisible on your skin, the high-tech formula blends flawlessly to set makeup and cut shine. Optical blurring pigments instantly minimize imperfections, diminish shine and create a stunning soft-focus effect that looks professionally retouched.

The first pressed powder released by Urban Decay, it boasts a formulation worthy of the Naked name.  Unlike powders that leave skin looking chalky or cakey, the Naked Skin Finishing Powder gives a radiant complexion and natural-looking finish.

With a formula this luxe, the packaging had to match. The custom compact (in hues of gunmetal and champagne) feels weighty in the hand and has a Naked-embossed push button. The top compartment features a full-size mirror—which will always come in handy—and a separate compartment underneath holds the applicator sponge. It also comes with a pretty carrying pouch (covered in a purple X-rayed flower design) to keep the case protected in your bag.

It is available in 5 shades that coordinate with Naked Skin Liquid Makeup:

The first thing that caught my eye about this new product is its packaging. Slim, sleek and functional, it resembles the packaging of a higher-end cosmetic brand (think Burberry Makeup) rather than the usual purple plastic offerings from Urban Decay. That said, Urban Decay still managed to sneak in its signature purple hue through the x-ray flowers design on the carrying pouch that comes with it, to help keep the shiny surface smooth and scratch-free even when tossed around in your makeup pouch.

Despite it’s slim size, there is still a spare compartment for the sponge within the compact, so you don’t have to worry about having to find another bag to keep a sponge/brush for touch-ups on-the-go. If you don’t use sponges for touch-ups, no worries! The compartment can also be used to store spare bobby-pins and other tiny essentials (think safety pins or cotton buds) so that they don’t get lost to the depths of your bag.

I test-drove the shade “Naked Medium” which suited my tanned skin to a tee! Soft, buttery and non-chalky, the formulation of this powder is amazing and glides onto the skin smoothly to leave a natural finish. As you can probably tell from the swatch, after it is blended out, it is practically invisible on the skin!

I find that it works best when worn over a bare face or light coverage base as it can make your makeup look thick and cakey if applied over already full coverage makeup. It provides light to medium coverage, depending on how many layers you add, which helps to give a natural-looking finish. Thus, if you have relatively good skin with slight hyperpigmentation and/or spots,  concealing your problem areas first and then going over with this powder will leave your skin looking natural and flawless.

As I have oily skin, I find that this powder works really well in shine control while still giving my skin a luminous glow. I start getting shiny after about 3-4 hours and the setting powder that I usually use over my foundation tends to leave me looking very matte but flat. The Naked Skin Finishing Powder on the other hand, stays put for a good 5-6 hours, not only keeping my makeup in place (which is a problem for those with oily skin!) but also keeps the finish of my skin looking dewy and healthy (demi-matte!) rather than just plain matte. I like to apply it with a Real Techniques Multi-Purpose Brush which is a large powder brush, and as a final step to the face, over blush and bronzer as I find that it helps to keep those in place.

How To:

On days that you don’t want to wear too much makeup, simply layering this over your daily moisturiser is enough to achieve a luminous glow. For greater coverage, apply it right after your foundation/BB cream to set your makeup. Do note that if you’re wearing an already full coverage foundation, the powder can make your skin look cakey so it is recommended for use over light coverage foundations and BB creams. Tend to get a little shiny throughout the day? Its slim and sleek packaging makes it convenient to tote around for touch-ups on-the-go.
