Turning 26 + Other Such Events.

By Winyeemichelle
In case you were smart and totally tuned out of my annoying ‘It’s my birthday!’ spiel last week, I turned 26 last Thursday and it felt really weird. Birthdays are so weird when you’re not 5 and asking for the newest Faerie Barbie doll, right? (FYI, I once received 3 said Faerie Barbies on my birthday and it was great. Granny Daisy and I played with them in the garden under the pear tree in the old-old house until it got dark!)
This year, I was lucky enough to spend my birthday with my boyfriend, Harvey. So often when you're, again, not 5, you'll end up spending the day with colleagues at work or in my case, at home with a laptop and more coffees than is recommended! My wonderful family took me out for a pre-birthday dinner at Bill's on the 1st where we laughed and talked and consumed plenty of red wine. Oh, and there was a PokeStop outside the restaurant!
I woke up sleepily, alone, and paced into the kitchen for an obligatory coffee and breakfast of Korean dumplings. My parents were out renovating one of our families’ properties to rent to a new tenant and my boyfriend was getting ready for the day.
Milo had absolutely no idea what I was talking about when I had my morning cuddle and catch-up with him. His last recollection of the B word ended up with him feasting on an entire pup-cake and snoozing on his back, after all!
Harvey showed up on my doorstep not long after that, a bunch of the most beautiful pale pink roses in one hand and the best card in the other. I honestly still pinch myself every time I see him because I can barely believe that this is all real. One day, you might get to know our full story. Maybe.
We walked the dog in faux-sun that led to real-rain and picked up ingredients to craft our favorite Quorn ham and mustard mayo rolls. (Oh how much I’d like to add ‘at the local farmers’ market’ in that sentence but the reality was ‘the Sainsbury’s where somebody once shouted at me to go back to my own country’…)
The funniest part of the day was when we decided to start watching an anime - Watamote - which is the strangest anime we’ve ever seen and I’ve a solid 10 years of the stuff under my belt.
And then… Harvey whisked me away to London for a surprise birthday feast at Jinjuu in Mayfair! We feasted on everything from kimbap to grilled platters and sliders and fried chicken. So damn good. We laughed and chatted and planned for the future before he surprised me with a sparkler in dessert!! After a sly post-dinner coffee, we walked hand-in-hand right down Piccadilly before hopping on our train home.
And that, in a nutshell, was me turning 26.
