Rhis is Seperation (ft. Shelf Nunny) – Tree

Whether or not you’re finding bands in the blogosphere and beyond that you love right now, there’s no denying that a ton of them are beginning to sound really similar. There’s also a camp of artists who are different for the sake of being different, which I personally find even more frustrating.

Amidst that clatter, though, there are also emerging acts that manage to do something new and interesting — better than the hundreds of artists next to them. This is the category where 18 year-old Cali resident Oliver Nickell falls. Under his artist alias of Tree, he releases undeniably catchy yet harsh pop/hip hop. Incorporating a slew of collaborators, Tree is trying out a ton of different styles and succeeding with each. Think Oberhofer meets WHY? with a bit of, honestly, I’m not even sure.  What Tree is doing keeps hitting me hard and I’m hooked.

Nickell makes all his music available for free, so check out the tracks below and download each and every one. Highlights are definitely “Stuck Down The Wrong Rabbit Hole (ft. Beat Culture & Lena Kuhn)” and “This is Seperation (ft. Shelf Nunny)”. Watch for their/his debut album, Splitting Branches, this spring.
