#TravelTuesday - Boutique Hotel in Pondicherry, India

Upon my last trip to India, I visited Pondicherry (Puducherry) in South India. It is an Indian Union Territory which was a French colonial settlement up until 1954. I will be sharing more in the upcoming travel posts. For now would like to share the charming hotel I stayed at.

Le Dupleix, constructed in 18th century was the residence of the Mayor of Pondicherry. It was recently renovated and converted into a luxury boutique hotel. As soon as you enter the wooden gates you are immersed into an old-world charm. The property has an exquisite woodwork, reminiscent of the French Indian carved woodwork in Pondicherry, which is all original, recovered from the house of Joseph Francois Dupleix.

The location is in the white town which is only a few blocks from the beach (about 7 minute walk). The property has the most interesting interiors I have seen in recent times. Our room was spacious, clean and with charming decor. I appreciated all the amenities in the room. However, the highlight of the hotel is it's staff. Each one of them, from the Front Desk staff to Adam the hotel manager, went out of their way to make our stay comfortable and memorable. They all were extremely warm, welcoming and courteous.

The food options are limited at the property, with just one restaurant. There were not many vegetarian options (lunch and dinner), with the exception of breakfast. And although the breakfast buffet is limited in choices, the food is delicious.

... parting thoughts

I would highly recommend this property, if nothing else for its architectural delight. It is perfect for couples, business travelers and families. Do note that the hotel does not have an escalator so it might be difficult for elderly people.
