Title: Traveling Artists Sketching an Arab Encampment, Cairo (1863)
Medium: Oil on canvas

This is a wonderful example of the Orientalist painter at work. Many traveled to far away lands in small groups to record the surroundings and people they would encounter.

Here the artist has shown two artists, whose names are not known to us discussing the setting while one of them sketches what he can observe from a unobtrusive distance. Often these sketches would turn into elaborate oil painting created in their home studios. I also find it fascinating to see how dressed up these artist where, while they were on these exploratory trips in heat they must not have been accustomed to.
