The purpose of most travel is business or pleasure. But some people like to use their time away from work and school to help others. There are many countries that offer travelers beautiful beaches and sights to see, in addition to opportunities to lend a hand in making the world a better place.
Here are some of the top destinations for volunteer travel:
Malawi
The Western African country of Malawi is known for its wildlife and beautiful beaches. Although this country is landlocked, the giant, freshwater Lake Malawi stretching through its eastern border is perfect for snorkeling and diving.
Despite the beauty of this country, Malawi is rated as one of the least developed countries in the world with four out of five families living in substandard homes, with little hope of ever being able to afford a decent house. That is why Habitat for Humanity hosts a two-week program there.
Volunteers help build houses made of kiln-fired clay bricks, glass windows, air vents, iron sheet roofs and a foundation made from large stones, brick or cement.
Other organizations have trips to Malawi for those interested in volunteering in medical clinics, teaching children how to play sports, and teaching English.
India
The second largest nation in the world has as many sights to see as it does volunteer opportunities. Volunteers can doing anything from helping run guesthouses, aiding in childcare efforts to teaching English, and working on farms.
Nepal
This Asian country located near the Himalayas features stunning mountain views, rich cultural experiences and opportunities for climbing and trekking. Volunteers that travel to Nepal also have the chance to work in an orphanage, school, or hospital in the city of Kathmandu.
There is also an opportunity for volunteers to teach English at Nepalese Buddhist monasteries on the outskirts of Kathmandu.
Thailand
Thailand is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Asia as well as ancient temples, night markets and peaceful waterfalls. This country is one of the most traveled-to destinations by volunteers due to the wide variety of opportunities in many interests. In Thailand, volunteers can work at local health organizations and schools; teach English; help build an education center; or work on wildlife conservation programs.
Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is known for its white sand beaches, calm ocean waters, and warm, friendly people. However, locals have very little and live in poor quality housing due to poverty and hurricanes.
Volunteers who travel to the Dominican Republic have the opportunity to work with health education programs, teach English, work with children and build homes. This is another country Habitat for Humanity builds homes in, working in nine different regions of the Dominican Republic.
