Top 10 Prospects By Level

By Kipper @pghsportsforum
I post these elsewhere so I figured I'd include them here. After the end of every season I rank the top 10 prospects per minor league level on the Pirates. For the four short season affiliates (Morgantown, Bristol, GCL and DSL) I set a minimum of 100 PA or 20 IP and for the four full season affiliates (Indianapolis, Altoona, Bradenton and West Virginia) I set a minimum of 200 PA or 40 IP.
The DSL season is over so I've reviewed the roster a bit and tried my best to educate myself at least a little on these players. Now generally I give a disclaimer that you shouldn't read too much into my rankings as I am far from an expert but that applies times ten here as I literally know next to nothing about most of these guys.
Top 10 Prospects
1. Kevin Sanchez, OF (17)
2. Rodolfo Castro, SS (17)
3. Roger Santana, LHP (18)
4. Jeremias Portorreal, OF (18)
5. Leandro Pina, RHP (17)
6. Sherten Apostel, 3B (17)
7. Chris Perez, SS (18)
8. Wilmer Contreras, RHP (18)
9. Larry Alcime, OF (17)
10. Yeudry Manzanillo, RHP (17)
Next In Line: Samuel Inoa, C (17) and Adonis Pichardo, RHP (20)
Sanchez, Castro, Pina, Apostel, Alcime, Manzanillo and Inoa are the big names from the Pirates 2015 signing class. Castro and Pina were the breakout players posting very good seasons. Sanchez, Apostel and Inoa didn't have great years but showed some promise for being so young. Alcime and Manzanillo had rough years and remain on the list almost solely due to their signing bonus.
Santana and Portorreal were the top returning players. Santana had an excellent year and was the best pitcher on the club. Portorreal (who was the Pirates big signing in 2013) started out rough but finished very strong and even earned a rare in season promotion to the states. Perez and Contreras were lesser returning players but both had solid seasons and put themselves on the radar. Pichardo meanwhile gained some notoriety last year for hitting 96 but usually sits in the low 90s. He had a solid season but I discount it some due to his age.
The GCL season and the Bristol seasons end Thursday so I will try to have at least one of them up on Friday.
