Todd Lynn – London Fashion Week AW/13

By Alicebodkin94 @AliceBodkin

Saturday I had the amazing opportunity to attend the Todd Lynn show at London Fashion Week. It was an incredible experience for me. Taking my first step into the courtyard, I was in awe of the creativity around me. For want of better words, I was literally buzzing. There was a diverse breeze of style as people effortlessly glided around the grounds.

After soaking up the sheer brilliance of what was outside the showroom, I was eagerly awaiting the event that would be Todd Lynn’s show. I was queuing with my invite with my friend, we managed to get somewhere to stand right at the back with a good view. I loved the fact that everyone was cramming in to watch the show.

The show of course was running late, maybe fashionably one could contend. Suddenly I eyed two assistants pacing the length of the catwalk with some shiny paper which seemed to compensate itself as the flooring. Moments later the lights were out and I was not too sure what was louder, the music, or the machine sounds of the camera’s clicking away at the speed of light.

The models then flounced unto the floor in gray trouser suits and cigarette pants. Lynn declared his inspiration was the 1890′s New York’s Gopher Gang with styling inspired by the civil war. This could have paid homage to the fact that the film Lincoln has not long been released. And contextually, both today and that era have commonalities. The civil war was a liberal movement that sought to see justice, fairness and equality with regards to abolishing slavery and civil rights. Today, conversations have moved on from slavery, but rather digest themselves in civil rights of homosexuals and civil partnerships. And it is these ideas that I find most inspiring about fashion. Fashion finds a way to intellectually provoke me to reflect upon society and the world.

The show started to introduce black and lace, which seems like a smooth transition from last season’s Gothic romantic trend, to a more grungy 90′s style with a hip hop twist. The model’s hair also visually communicated a 90′s vibe. The clothes embraced the prominent trends of minimalism and androgyny that sets London apart from New York.

For my first show at London Fashion Week, it was an incredible experience. I could not believe I was actually there. Once again, I fell in love with London again that day. I did not want to make my departure back to Nottingham. However, it is true what they say, all good things must come to end.
