The web is quite fascinating in the sense that it shifted from being just a giant resource for knowledge to one which is heavily represented by business. Unlike the real world, though, it’s entirely possible for the average Joe to tap into this amazing resource and launch their entrepreneurial ideas.

However, like any information found on the web, you’re bound to run into some not-so-viable methods for earning an online income. The net is fraught with business scams and misleading information. The reality of online business is the same for physical shops – you have to put in the time and effort.

If you’re one of those types that avoid the “magic buttons” then you’re already half way there. Here are some of the other parts of the online income equation …

1. Blogging

Blogging may have started as a platform for sharing what’s going on in your life but now it’s one of the easiest ways to begin earning money on the web. When you have a website and frequently populate it with content, you will attract visitors.

Once these individuals are on the site, you have the opportunity to earn through various methods, including:

  • Selling paid advertising space
  • Selling products or courses you’ve developed
  • Offering consulting or soliciting speaking engagements
  • Paid sponsorship

Once you build a sizable community you will gain these options to earn with a blog. Find something you’re passionate about, write your heart out (or do videos), and work hard building great relationships with fellow bloggers in your niche (and with the community).

2. Gaming

Gaming has come out of the bedroom and into the spotlight thanks to streaming services and professional gaming tournaments. The gaming industry is a multi-billion dollar machine. This means that companies are increasingly becoming interested in being a part of the marketplace whether it’s creating the games, the hardware, or providing services to gamers (and advertisers).

There are many different ways to earn an online income when you love games:

  • You could create “let’s play” style videos showing your progress throughout the game or showing demos of new releases, and then publishing them on video sharing websites. Once you gain enough of a following and views you can often monetize the videos with advertisements.
  • You could develop a gaming website that covers all the latest news, reviews, interviews, and other developments within the industry. Here you can begin soliciting advertisers or even begin sponsoring professional teams at tournaments.
  • You could be a part of a professional team (or even a group dedicated to gaming) where you could win at tournaments or do your own thing and win money online from playing games like Starcraft, CounterStrike, or even simple games like bingo or sports booking.

Overall, an affinity and love for games will give you the opportunity to earn a few bucks from something you’d probably do for free, anyway.

3. Freelancing

Freelancing is a great option if you possess a particular skill that’s in demand. The interesting thing, though, is that you’re bound to find someone in need of your expertise and knowledge even if you don’t feel you’re adequately experienced.

There are tons of options:

  • Freelance writing
  • Freelance translation
  • Freelance programming
  • Freelance web development
  • Freelance tutoring

The list goes on and on.

Gaining an entry into the freelance marketplace isn’t entirely difficult either:

  • You could start by offering services on sites like oDesk, Freelancer, or Guru
  • You could launch a portfolio site and drive quality leads through search, social, and advertising
  • You could do direct contact with businesses you feel are in need of your skills

Once you get a foothold on what you can do – and how to find clients – you’re bound to begin picking up some freelance work.

There are hundreds of ways to earn money online – some easier than others – but all requiring a basic amount of time and effort. Your best bet is to give one of the three, in this post, a shot because they will teach you many skills that you can leverage in all parts of your business and personal life. Good luck!
