Kong is definitely king.
It doesn't matter if you haven't watched the previous versions (1933, 1976 and 2005) of King Kong because Kong: Skull Island is not a remake. But if you really want to no one is stopping you. And while you're at it, make sure you watch Gareth Edwards' Godzilla (2014) because the monster movies that we know and love are heading towards a different direction.

The last sentence says it all and proves that this is definitely not a remake or a reboot. It is, shall we say, a preparation for the King Kong & Godzilla MonsterVerse.
Despite that, Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts' Kong: Skull Island still has the basic structure. The movie has a team of scientists, soldiers, and civilians traveling to an uncharted territory where they uncover the mystery as well as the massive threats. Besides these, the audience was given more details about Kong.
For thousands of years, the Iwi natives lived in fear. The creatures in the island where far too big like Kong and his family. One day the creature they fear the most became their savior when nasty big lizards that lurk beneath climbed up to devour, destroy, and dominate. Hank Marlow, John C. Reilly's character call these creatures Skullcrawlers - the giant monsters who were also responsible for the death of Kong's family. Thus, Kong became the king of the island and a god for the natives.
Godzilla vs. Kong
Story-wise Kong: Skull Island is a good monster movie. Though it does not beat the 1933 version and Peter Jackson's epic monster adventure (King Kong 2005), I appreciate the present structure because Legendary and Warner Bros. Pictures is reinventing and uniting the two most iconic and all-powerful monsters. With the release of Kong: Skull Island, we are able to see the reinvention and compare the two.
While Godzilla gave us a slowly developing story with a massive ending, Kong gave us an intense beginning and even more intense ending perfect for his nature. Jordan Vogt-Roberts' Kong: Skull Island gave us something else and more.
In 2015, Legendary announced that they will be releasing KONG: SKULL ISLAND in 2017 (check), GODZILLA 2 for 2018 and GODZILLA VS. KONG for 2020. With all the developments, it's going to be interesting to see where King Kong and Godzilla go after making both heroes in their respective movies.
