This Week In Travel And Health

By Healthytravelblog @healthytravel1

This Week In Travel And HealthThe week was, quite obviously, dominated by Superstorm Sandy. The mess and tragedy filled up the news from dozens of angles, and many of our East Coast readers without power are probably reading this on a smartphone that they charged at a community generator. And Sandy certainly had a big impact on international travelers looking to travel through the three New York City area airports. The Telegraph’s David Millward reports that as many as 50,000 British citizens were stranded by the storm.

One of the many angles the media has looked at is the idea that Hurricane Sandy is a product of global warming and climate change. Forgetting the politics of cause-and-effect, the changing world climate is something that has a health impact across the globe – extreme conditions are blamed in part for epidemics of illnesses such as malaria, diarrhea and dengue fever. To help travelers and others better understand where the greatest impacts are, the World Health Organization has partnered with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has created an Atlas of Health and Climate.

If you’re a frequent traveler, you probably have a routine for getting through security with minimum inconvenience. But as the Wall Street Journal’s Scott McCartney writes, you can’t be too rigid in that routine because not all airport security is created equal.

When you’re traveling across multiple time zones, sleep becomes an issue. At USA Today, Nancy Trejos offers some ideas on how to get some shuteye when you’re on the road.

If you’re headed to Italy, the Wall Street’s Journals Aaron Maines writes about a few apps that will help you navigate the country. And throughout Europe, the unique skill of hailing a taxi is something that can be invaluable when you’re visiting. But too often, you don’t figure it out until your trip is ending. But never fear – the New York Times Jacy Meyer blogs about a new service called Cabforce that will help you book a taxi in major European cities.

Those safety videos at the start of your flight are, generally speaking, not too compelling. Well Air New Zealand has a remedy for that. CNNGO’s Hufia Wong reports on the airline’s hilarious Hobbit-themed safety video.

And, finally, CNN’s Katia Hetter has some advice – get your holiday plane tickets now!
