The buzz this week is all about Titanic tourism – the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic will be April 14th and 15th. And while passengers on the Costa Concordia may disagree, it’s a disaster that we still can’t really wrap our arms around. But lots of folks will try – or at least indulge ina big dose of nostalgia.
There are commemorative events on both sides of the Atlantic, including today’s release of Titanic 3D, the update of the landmark James Cameron film. In Wales, there’s a museum exhibit opening today devoted to ham radio operator Artie Moore, who heard the Titanic’s SOS signal but was helpless to do anything stop it from happening. In Ireland, they’re preparing for a huge music and film festival to commemorate the occasion.
Perhaps the most interesting event is the Titanic Memorial Cruise – 1300 passengers will take part in the cruise that, next Saturday night, will be in the exact spot the Titanic was in when it hit that fateful iceberg 100 years before.
I hope they’re careful…
