Thinking Ultimate Relaxation? Think Pulau Kapas, Malaysia.

Technicalities

Pulau Kapas (which translates as Cotton Island, the name being a reference to its immaculately white beaches) is a small and relatively unknown island on the east coast of Malaysia. To get there, catch a bus to Kuala Terengganu, and then a taxi to the coastal town of Marang. At the jetty you’ll be able to get a map of the island, and if needed the guys can even call the resorts to check the availability and rates. Kapas is only 5km away from Marang, which amounts to a short speedboat ride (with emphasis on speed, as the boatsmen are fearless). They will drop you off at the beach right next to your resort.

Chillout is the name of the game

From then on you’re officially in heaven (if peace and quiet, swaying hammocks, a sunny beach and the shade of palm trees are your definition of paradise, of course).

While we were there (late May), Kapas was almost devoid of tourists. I’m not sure if it ever gets full at all, but considering the fact that it’s a smaller and a much less known island than the likes of Langkawi or Penang on Malaysian west coast, or the Perhentians or Redang on the east coast (not to even mention Borneo), I presume it always maintains a chilled vibe.

Don’t expect beach umbrellas, shops, noisy bars or beach parties. Instead, bring a beach towel, a few good books and/or a good companion. There is one place (that I know of) where you can get Internet, but forget it too if you can. Get in a hammock, grab a fresh coconut with a straw (though even straws are too much of a touristy thing on Kapas, and you’ll most likely just pour your coconut water into a glass), and immerse in the here and now. It’s ridiculously easy here, trust me.

Yes, you can rent some snorkeling gear, you can even make arrangements for a diving trip (there is only one dive center on the island), but if you ask me, why bother. Just get back in the hammock! Even mosquitoes are lazy on Kapas, and come out on a hunt for only 1,5 hours in the evening. Don’t go against the current, not here.
