So, no, this didn't happen in Amsterdam. And Gouda's a good two hours away, so it's not like they're terribly close (though you could definitely sneak out there for a day trip).

But, really, this is news that cannot go unshared.

If you have never tasted a stroopwaffel, well, you have not lived.

But if you have, you know that - beyond a shadow of a doubt - they are the most amazing gift to mankind.

Stroopwaffels are frighteningly delicious thin waffle wafers with a golden, gooey syrup on the inside.

They're fabulous warm, cool, in ice cream, with coffee, even as a liquer. Anyway you serve them, they're super addictive.

Every time I head to the United States for a visit, I always take back one suitcase filled to overflowing with stroopwaffels for eager friends and family.

The typical Dutch treat comes from Gouda, so it's appropriate that it was in this city where the largest stroopwaffel the world has ever known was made. It took 60 kilos of dough, 15 kilos of syrup, and a 3,000 kilo waffle iron, but they did it.

It was baked following the original stroopwaffel recipe. The first taste went to Gouda's mayor Milo Schoenmaker, after which the large crowd gathered to witness the spectacle was invited to have at it.

The initiative was started by a group known as the 7 Gouwenaars and it took a year-and-a-half for their dream of baking a 2-meter-plus-in-diameter stroopwaffel to become a reality.

The accomplishment was submitted to the Guiness Book of World Records, so it'll be exciting to see whether or not this record breaker will make it in the next edition.
