The World of Designers Hotels 122: 25 Hour Hotel, Zurich

By Nogarlicnoonions @nogarlicnoonion

The popping candy colors and inviting communal spaces dotted throughout 25hours Hotel Number One create a playful atmosphere equally suited to relaxation and revelry. Sixties and seventies-inspired design details begin with a dramatic curved and metal-studded reception desk, hand-tufted pile rugs from Kasthall and curved geometrical shapes in varying shades of pink, red, and orange.

Located in the city’s west, at Otto von Bahrenpark, the hotel’s communal spaces are designed to encourage young guests to meet and mingle. Clientele are transported to another era, as they stretch out on in front of the fireplace on low lounge seats by Zanotta under the spiraling flicker of disco balls. The retro rooftop, with its fringed straw umbrellas and Tiki vibe, is ideally situated for soaking up the sun, and a cocktail.

Guest rooms are more refined with patterned wallpaper, stark whites and exposed concrete being softened by pale blues and mossy greens. Families of up to four may share one of the specially created XL-Family rooms. While small groups of up to ten enjoy even more privacy across the street at the 25hours guesthouse, with five rooms, hardwood floors and a communal kitchenette that is just as inviting as the main building’s living and dining rooms.

Surprise, seduction and vigor are the basis of the “25hours” hotel’s concept. Even your own arrival catches you pleasantly off-guard: 420 convex chrome mirrors stud the black, curved reception desk, reflecting your entrance manifold.

It’s one of the many playful elements on a designer-set that pays homage to the 1960s and 70s with flowing surface shapes, hand-tufted pile rugs from Kasthall, mod Brionvega television sets, and spun-metal table lamps from Flos, who produced the prototype and first batch for the hotel. A design hotel that literally spreads design in so far as furnishings and home accessories can be ordered directly through 25hours.

The core idea of interior design firm 3Meta was to create convertible spaces for public or private functions. Informal communal rooms have been designed with the idea of encouraging the hotel’s young clientele to communicate with one another. Circular insets in the ceiling alter the mood using bright, clear light by day, and a club-like feel at night. The living Room is reserved for guests only and invites you to stretch out on low lounge seats in front of the giant flat screen, the fire place or the Wurlitzer Jukebox.

Public areas are dipped in warm pinks, reds and oranges. The guestrooms come in two styles: Find cool retreats resplendent in pale blues and watery greens or alternatively playful cocoons with retro patterns and warm touches of magenta and red. Equally groovy is the desk that can either be turned into a seat or a suitcase rack. Unsparingly stylish, 25hours is affordable fun where guests make themselves at home.
