The Wolf of Wall Street soundtrack

Do people actually buy movie soundtracks? Most of them are filled with obvious songs, filled out with an "original" muzak title theme. There are exceptions to the rule - Ennio Morricone's Once Upon A Time in the West, Trois Coleurs Bleu. The soundtrack for the latest Martin Scorsese movie The Wolf of Wall Street could have been contender.

They hired Randall Poster (Boardwalk Empire) as a Music Supervisor and Robbie Robertson as an executive music producer and the director himself is a music buff. so what could go wrong? Quite a lot. When you make a movie about a bad young brat taking risks on the stock market, you'd expect a collection of adventurous tunes. There's only two of 'em. Romeo Void contributes Never Say Never and 7Horse weighs in with blues shouter Meth Lab Zoso Sticker. The rest of the tracks, a grab bag of well known jazz and blues standards has included on hundreds of compilations already. The set includes two covers - Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings tackle Goldfinger (nice try, but no match for the original and The Lemonhead's speeded up version of Mrs. Robinson tries to rock hard but the music sounds like the backing track of disregarded Bangles demo. O, and trying to be hip with Malcolm McLaren's Double Dutch was a stupid idea.

The Wolf of Wall Street is released on Virgin. Available on iTunes and Amazon or cut-out bin near you real soon. Let's hope for the contributors (if they are still alive) that they settled for a hefty sum upfront instead of a percentage.
