The Vampire Diaries 3x10: The New Deal

Original Air Date: 5 January 2012

StorylineStefan has hidden the coffins containing the bodies of Klaus' family, and Klaus quickly turns to violence to convince Damon and Elena that no one will be safe until he finds Stefan and gets his family back. Tyler continues to make the most of his new abilities as a hybrid, but he has to face the disturbing consequences of his actions as well. After a terrifying incident, Elena and Alaric grow increasingly concerned about Jeremy's attitude and, ultimately, his safety. Alaric meets the beautiful Dr. Fell, who is intrigued with his amazing ability to heal. While trying to strike a deal with Klaus, Elena delivers news that truly shocks him.Best Quote:

Klaus: I think it’s about time we had a drink, don’t you?
Damon: I’d say we were overdue.
Klaus: Well, you’ve been so busy, what with all your plotting and scheming...
Damon: You know me. Never miss a chance to plan an epic failure.

Damon's BestTake it from me: Estranged is bad, dead is worse.Review: How come TVD and TSC both started with a dream this week? Is Kevin Williamson running out of ideas?

Minor rant and moving on. The Vampire Diaries returns after its 2-month hiatus with a bang, but then again, what episode isn't that? Emotions flow through Mystic Falls all over the place and range from anger and disappointment to love. And a very confused Elena. Let me just put it this way: if you're one of those people who love Mr. Somerhalder's eyes, than the last scene probably had you go "awww!". I'm one of those.
But, as I tend to do almost always, I'm getting ahead of myself. When we left Mystic Falls back in November, Stefan had just betrayed Elena and Damon and saved Klaus' life in order to save his brother's. Nothing new there and, just like Damon, who found out about this a bit too soon, if you ask me, I have to ask just when is he going to stop doing that? Why can't he go all Angelus for a while and get his butt out of Elena's life? But that would be too easy. I just wished Elena would stay in the dark a little bit longer, I hate emotionally confused people.
But it seems that no one in that town knows how to keep a secret. Not Stefan, not Bonnie, and certainly not Damon. Whenever something like this happens, I get to wonder what is there left for the rest of the season, but I should stop doing that with TVD, a show that never fails to deliver surprises. And it's still called the season of the Originals, and we're still to see more of those, and hopefully Elijah is among those.
The episode was an emotional roller-coaster for everyone, but I believe Jeremy got the most part of that. What with being dumped by Bonnie, getting fired, bonding and then being betrayed by his BFF of the moment, almost getting run down by a car driven by one of Klaus' minions and having to chop off said minion's head off, Jeremy had a full couple of days. That's more than a sixteen year old fantasizes about, but then again, unfortunately there are no vampires in real life. So I get why Elena decided to have Damon compel him again and send him out of town. That's what a big sister does, protects her baby brother without thinking of the consequences her actions might have on her. "Estranged is bad, dead is worse". Leave it to Damon to put it so simply yet so accurately.
Jeremy's send-off makes sense from a logistic point of view too. There are way too many characters and not enough time to develop them all, so having one of them disappear for a trip to relatives (see Bonnie and now Jer) is just another way to not having to put them all in one episode.
There was enough time though for Alaric to make a new acquaintance and possibly love interest. A bit too soon after what happened to Jenna, if you ask me, but then again, the heart wants what it wants and Meredith Fell is a looker.
Before going to bed, let me just list some of the other stuff that went on: Elena made a deal with Klaus to give him vengeful Rebekah, despite fearing for her life if she were to come back to the realm of the living. Good or bad decision? As it turned out, good; indulging Klaus from time to time is not a bad idea, plus, his decision not to bring her back might have just saved Elena some restless nights, though he had other reasons for doing that. Stefan revealed the location of the stolen Originals and bonded with Damon over finding a new way to kill Klaus and keep Elena out of it. Doesn't this seem like a deja-vu? Tyler explained the difference between being compelled and being sired. "Compulsion... That's just mind control, like hypnosis. And being sired is... It's like faith." So apparently he'd be willing to rip his heart off if Klaus asked him to, so how long will it take before Tyler reevaluates his priorities?
And then there was the kiss. Oh, the kiss! There's no secret I'm not a Stefan fan, but all that aside, that moment was just perfect. I was afraid there would be yet again too much build-up and no conclusion, but Damon's decision to feel guilty about his deeds and not about his thoughts was the best one he made in a long time. After all, no one can blame us for what we think or feel, so if he should feel guilty about something, it might as well be something he actually did. It was a perfect little kiss that left Elena confused and made me go all teary and believe in love again, so I'd say it fulfilled its purpose. I don't really think it will go anywhere, especially after Elena finds out the Salvatores are hiding things from her again, not to forget that she now knows Stefan is not all that bad, but hey, we can dream.
