For many people the idea of having even just a small amount of building work done at their home is seen as a double edged sword. Firstly there is the excitement that you feel about the changes that you are planning to make and how it will look when it is finished. Then there is the anxiety and stress that come with trying to find the right construction company. Imagine then how much those feelings are magnified when trying to find a firm to build a house. The following is a list of the top 5 tips for finding the right construction company to give you a helping hand and ensure your project, however big or small, goes without a hitch.

  1. The first thing that you need to do is actually evaluate the work that you want done. So for example if you have a small building job then you will be ok with a small builder. However if you do want someone to build your dream home then you will need to find a construction company that specialises in that. Likewise if you have an aspect of your project that is specialised, such as a certain type of brickwork or working with an unusual material, then you will need to find specialists that have the knowledge and training to do it.
  2. If your job is fairly run-of-the-mill then it is always better to use a construction company that came as a recommendation. Talk to friends and family to see if they have had any experience with a local construction company that they would be willing to recommend. It is also worth having a drive around your local neighborhood to see if anyone is having any construction work done. If they are then don’t be afraid to knock on the door and ask how things are going and if they have the telephone number of the construction company.
  3. If your job is more specialised as briefly mentioned above then you may have difficulty in tracking down many construction companies that will be able to help. You may find that the staff of your local builder’s merchant will be able to make recommendations. You will also find that any associations that promote the type of build, material or skill that you want will have a list of registered construction companies in your area that they will happily provide to you.
  4. No matter what you require from a construction company always make sure that you meet with them face-to-face to discuss your requirements. Try and meet at the site if possible and always meet at least three different companies. Obtain written quotes from all of them and ask what guarantees they will provide with their work. Also ensure that they state an approximate time scale within the quote. Compare all of the quotes and make sure that you take into account everything and not just go with the construction company that offers the cheapest price.
  5. Before making your final decision, ask to see examples of the work that the construction companies on your shortlist have carried out. If possible ask them to show you jobs that are similar in style or design to the work that you want them to do for you. It is always good to meet with previous clients to find out their experiences and if they have had a good one then they shouldn’t mind doing this for the construction company that they used.
