The Power of Powder Review & Video Demo

By Blessmybag @blessmybag

Powder is a local cosmetic favorite here in the Philippines. It is by far the base of choice for many women on the go in humid, tropical countries especially for some with little or no makeup skills. Some are just in for the bare minimum and don't want a shiny T-zone while others choose to cover a multitude of sins.

To some of you, and I do understand, liquid seems lethal and powder is just...easy. However, it's just as easy to get powder wrong especially in the shade department. Pick a powder in the wrong shade and you've done yourself in. Choosing your spot on shade is the first step in the right direction with powder bases. Today, I want to share three of my favorite locally available powder products. Read on to see how these powder products look when worn and watch the video demo I made to show how I apply them.

So basically it goes a little somethin' like this. Check out my individual takes on each of these powders plus watch my video review and application demonstration embedded below.

BEFORE SHOT (BAREFACED) THE POWER OF POWDER REVIEW & VIDEO DEMO

There are only a handful of makeup brands we can boast of being proudly Filipino in the cosmetic department, and one of them is undoubtedly Ellana Minerals. Their loose powder foundation proved itself in my experience to be the powder foundation that "just worked" for a couple of friends of mine who were not connected to one another and that surprised me.

One friend was an international school and middle-east raised travel bug and the other a friend from my church...both of whom are extremely particular when it comes to what they like. Both of them praised Ellana. The coverage this loose foundation provides wins because being loose the choices from sheer to full on coverage are made available, and also no detectable shimmer. You can purchase Ellana Loose Mineral foundations here (sachet refills are Php350 and complete product with the plastic pot is Php499) or go to their Makati head office and retail here at La Fuerza Compound Pasong Tamo (corner Sabio).

2. BENEFIT COSMETICS Hello Flawless pressed powder foundation.

This product has been around a couple of years and is the accompanying pressed powder to the liquid foundation range, but it can also be used on its own if you don't need heavy coverage. I like the Hello Flawless powder range because they have a good range (8-9 shades I think) ranging from light to medium to very deep skin shades.

The formula is like a silkier MAC Studio Fix powder with a bit more fallout and less oil control, it is a very photogenic pressed powder. My regular shade is Petal but in the summer I turn into Champagne. Benefit products are available at Benefit Cosmetics boutiques locally, this one costs about Php1450 or Php1650 if I'm not mistaken.

3. FS COSMETICS (formerly Fanny Serrano) Cake Foundation 2-way powder (rectangle compact).

This stuff is local and legendary, it's seen decades of tried and tested moments with celebrities and brides alike. It might not be deemed together with words like "premium" or "luxe" but it still flies off shelves in bulk today whenever stock deliveries are made. This is different from the FS round pressed one which also claims to be 2-way, all I know is this rectangle compact in Mocha is the one Fanny Serrano still uses on Sharon Cuneta and she personally stocks up on it regularly for her personal use according to a reliable source.

FS Cosmetics Cake foundation powder is the 2-way powder that beats humidity to a pulp when applied correctly and looks quite flawless in photographs and video. The shade I use is Mocha (fit for MAC NC 30-35 wearers). This product is available in SM Beauty Makati and SM Beauty Megamall, I'm not quite sure about SM North Edsa but you could check.
