The Jazz Cellar – a Hidden Musical Gem

By Foodie Cravings @foodiecravings

The Jazz Cellar is truly Perth’s hidden musical gem. Tucked away behind Mt Hawthorn’s Salvation Army in the middle of suburbia with little signage off Scarborough Beach Road. I would have never of known The Jazz Cellar existed if it wasn’t for my jazz loving foodie friend Naomi living down the road.

The Jazz Cellar is a venue created by passionate music lovers – it’s super casual and opens Friday nights only. Entry down through the phone booth (super man style!) is $20 cash and there’s limited capacity. To get a table, Naomi’s friend lined up at 3pm Friday afternoon with our combined cash and stayed within the venue to reserve our seats until the performance started around 7pm.

It was a fun night out! Our pockets and stomachs were pretty full by the time we left! Drinks and food were BYO so we picked up some pizzas from of course burger boy and I’s Crust, a carton of cider and made our way there after work.

Corner House Jazz Band, entertained us not only with their music but their lively personalities…

These old blokes have been playing jazz for 19 years at The Jazz Cellar and 38 years at a venue in Fremantle!

I loved the music so much, I bought the Corner House Jazz Band’s CD Album Blaze Away for around the $20/25 mark, now I just need a CD player

The Jazz Cellar

The Jazz Cellar is the Perth live music venue to be at, if you love a bit of a dancing and your jazz. It’s also the kind of place where it isn’t creepy for older men to ask younger ladies to dance. If you manage to find the time or a lovely friend to line up early on a Friday to get into The Jazz Cellar, keep an eye out for the older man in a black vest and trousers – he is a hit with the ladies and fun to watch

:)

The Jazz Cellar audience takes their jazz pretty seriously though, so it’s not the place to go for a full on chat (watch out for the older lady who cleans up after everyone). For a proper catch up, I’d go to The Laneway Lounge for dinner and cocktails in their Dining Room, do book though as it’s all table seating.

From memory, everything at The Jazz Cellar finishes up by 10:30pm and I remember feeling at the end of night like I had been transported out of Perth into this cool underground jazz space in just a span of a few hours. The Jazz Cellar reminds me of Chicago and I’d recommend it to any jazz lover.
