The Italian Family: the Names in Italian Language

The family, basic reality in the daily life of every Italian even though, in this modern age, the situations compared to the traditional families have changed. In a traditional family, there are the parents = genitori, mom= mamma  and dad= papà. Children who are sisters = sorelle and brothers = fratelli. Grandparents = nonni  ( nonna = grandmother – nonno = granfather) are a very important part especially and they  help the parents in growing up their grandchildren = nipoti. In the basic family, the husband = marito and the wife= moglie  will have the father-in-law = suocero and the mother-in-law= suocera, and therefore, and they coul have the  brother in low = cognato and the sister in low = cognata. These will also be the uncle= zio and  the aunt = zia. These are the basic family relationships, but the traditional Italian family is much larger and more complex: a real sociological phenomenon. Let's say for the moment you will know how  to call in Italian language these persons and benvenuti in famiglia!
