Deadline has reported that the CW has put a Flash series on the fast-track. Prior to appearing in his own series, that will focus on his origins and his life as the scarlet speedster, Barry Allen (yes Barry Allen, no Wally West or Jay Garrick) will meet up with Oliver Queen in Starling City, in three episodes of the upcoming season of Arrow, with the third episode serving as the springboard for his own series. The new series will come from the co-creators of Arrow; Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg.
The planned episodes for Barry Allen will be episodes eight and nine, which will be based in Starling City, and then return in episode twenty, giving more of a look into Barry’s world, and work as the backdoor pilot for the new series.
“When we first meet Barry Allen, he’s just a forensic scientist….an ordinary man,” Kriesberg said during a conference call earlier this week.
Part of the fun for the audience is to see how we view our Arrow take on the Flash legacy. Some of it will feel very familiar to DC Comics, some of it hopefully will feel different, fresh and exciting. The same way we approached Arrow is the same way we’re approaching Barry.
It’s also been confirmed that he will be called The Flash, have his classic costume, and while based in the Arrow universe, he will have his powers, and it sounds like his origin will be fairly close to what everyone is familiar with.
There will be extraordinary events in the world and the characters will react in the same way. The fact he has superpowers, there’s something more relatable about Barry among of the Big Seven of the Justice League. He got his powers by accident; he’s not a god, he’s not an alien…his reactions to that feel very…human and grounded.
So what do you think about this news regarding Barry Allen coming into the world of Arrow, and DC’s small screen universe expanding before their cinematic universe? Do you think this will help springboard them into a full fledged Justice League film down the road, or do you think they’ll keep the two universes separate and introducing The Flash on the small screen will only cause conflict with the eventual Justice League film?
All I know is, my son will be super excited about being able to watch a Flash series.
