Having lost my father to melanoma and being a supporter of sun protection clothing companies like Coolibar, along with non-profits like the Melanoma Research Foundation, I love to see any advances in products, clothing and/or technologies that protect us from the harmful rays of the sun. But, this…this is crazy. The Face-Kini is the latest craze to hit China’s beaches to protect the sunbathers from sun.
Are you as creeped out by the image as I am?
Worn with a full body suit because, well obviously, a Face-Kini would look absolutely silly when worn with a traditional bathing suit (duh!), these face coverings also repel insects and jellyfish…and other people, I’m sure.

In all seriousness, knowing people who are terribly susceptible to Melanoma or who have already been diagnosed, perhaps it isn’t the worst idea in the world. You can splash about with your family without worrying about reapplying sunscreen or wearing a hat…if you can find someone else willing to swim with you. Yet, I just can’t help but think there has to be a better way than looking like you’re wearing the swimsuit version of a burqa.

For those just looking for some added protection, wouldn’t following some of the standard sun rules like staying out of the sun during peak hours, wearing sunscreen, wearing a UPF 50+ hat, sunglasses work just fine? I mean, someone get these people a large umbrella, for God’s sakes.

And, what do these people do when they’re not at the beach? The sun doesn’t only affect us when we’re beachside. Do these people wear them while running around the city between the peak sun hours of 10 am and 2pm? Do they go out jogging in them, or take their lunch breaks wearing them? Where does the line get drawn?

Yes, I’m all for protection and prevention of any kind. But, then there are extremes, like this. If you’re that scared of the sun, perhaps staying out of it completely is a better idea.
