To get a good understanding of London, we spent much of our first full day at the Museum of London learning about the English Civil War, the Plague, and the Great Fire.

While walking in the area, we passed St. Mary-le-Bow. A person born within the sound of the bells of this church is said to be a true Cockney. This church is also one of the ones mentioned in the Oranges and Lemons song — “I do not know says the great bell of Bow.”

St. Mary-le-Bow. These days, the church serves the workers of the City with short weekday services, but nothing on Sunday.

We could have spent another day in the Museum of London and a third walking around to see the various churches and other historical sites in this historic area.
