I recently spent a very enjoyable evening watching the movie, The Bouquet, which just arrived on DVD today! In this story, two sisters who have never gotten along very well, suddenly find themselves trying to work together to save their parents’ floral business after their father dies. Terri (Kristy Swanson) is a high-powered businesswoman from the big city, while her sister, Mandy, lives closer to home and runs a farmers’ co-op. The two girls couldn’t be more different in personality, and long-standing resentments against each other have kept them apart -- and away from their parents. Joined together in grief over their father’s passing, they realize they need to find common ground -- and overcome old jealousies -- in order to save the family business and get their mom back on her feet economically.
The Bouquet was so realistic in its portrayal of family dynamics. It shows how sibling rivalry can reach into adulthood and affect relationships for many years to come. Since I have a sister, too, I could really relate to how the two sisters in the movie couldn’t resist bringing up old grievances against each other and their parents. It also nudged me into realizing that our parents won’t be around forever, and nothing is more important than spending time with them. This movie makes it clear that there will always be “sore points” between family members, but that love will see them through.
This film also features Danny Glover in a small role as the family’s pastor, as well as Michael Shanks, who plays a former classmate of Terri’s and has found healing at her parents’ flower business after being in the military. Needless to say, Terri and Mandy will not only re-capture their love for each other as sisters, but will open their hearts to new relationships with two men who will help them heal.
