Known for its illustrious roots as a comic strip and humorous satire as an animated television sitcom, “The Boondocks,” has provided viewers with an entertaining perspective on lifestyles, stereotypes, and social affairs since 1999 when it was first published in newspapers and more so in 2005, when it landed a spot on Cartoon Network‘s late night programming block, Adult Swim. Having aired three seasons so far, fans were pleased to hear of an upcoming fourth season, which may contain a few setbacks. Not only will this be the fourth and final season of “The Boondocks,” but it will also be produced without the help of its inventive creator, Aaron McGruder. McGruder confirms this in a recent Facebook post stating, “As the world now knows, “The Boondocks,” will be returning for a fourth season, but I will not be returning with it. I’d like to extend my gratitude to Sony and Adult Swim for three great seasons.” A press release with Sony Pictures Television, who generate the series, also note that the new season “was produced without the involvement of Aaron McGruder, when a mutually agreeable production schedule could not be determined.”
McGruder expresses his feelings with his departure from the series by saying, “I created The Boondocks two decades ago in college, did the daily comic for six years, and was show runner on the animated series for the first three seasons. “The Boondocks,” pretty much represents my life’s work to this point. Huey, Riley, and Granddad are not just property to me. They are my fictional blood relatives. Nothing is more painful than to leave them behind.” He also shared what he felt his responsibility was in the making of “The Boondocks,“ by stating, “It was important to offend, but equally important to offend for the right reasons. For three seasons I personally navigated this show through the minefields of controversy. It was not perfect. And it definitely was not quick. But it was always done with a keen sense of duty, history, culture, and love. Anything less would have been simply unacceptable.” Now we find McGruder working on both a new project and chapter in his life, “…I’m finally putting a life of controversy and trouble-making behind me with my upcoming Adult Swim show, BLACK JESUS,” quoted from a post on the “Black Jesus Series,” Facebook page.
Fans everywhere experience mixed emotions about what to expect in the upcoming season, but most are still proud supporters of the show, “I definitely feel like the new season will be different from the previous ones, now that Aaron McGruder has departed from the series, but I think as long as there are still some of the same creative minds who partook in the making of the previous episodes, that this new season will not disappoint fans,” said Noah Cook, a devoted follower of the series, “I also have no doubt “Black Jesus,” will be freaking awesome! If he thought of “The Boondocks,” I’m sure this new show will be great too.” Season four of “The Boondocks,” was originally supposed to air in January of this year, but has been pushed back for reasons unspecified. Now it is announced to debut on Monday, April 21, 2014 on the same programming station, Adult Swim, at 10:30 pm. This has been a well anticipated comeback, and the show is expected to be just as enjoyably comedic as before.
