The Beach at Trouville

I was first introduced to the charming seaside town of Trouville in 2010 when Lynn, of Lunch with Lynn, invited me to stay with her for a few days in early spring.
I’ve always wanted to return and last week I had the rare gap in my schedule where I had a few days off from touring. Looking for a last minute place to go that wasn’t too far from Paris, I decided to go to Trouville again and enlisted Lynn to join me.
Trouville is a little over two hours from Paris by train and the center is a 10-minute walk from the train station. We arrived about 11AM on Tuesday and walked through the bustling food and flea market where I made Lynn buy an extravagantly purple print scarf for only 5 euros. We enjoyed strong coffee and croissants at a café on the water and filled our lungs with the fresh salted sea air, a much needed respite from the summer pollution of Paris.
Spending most of my summers at the Jersey shore when I was a kid, I couldn’t wait to get to the beach in Trouville, as my soul instantly longs for the beach once the hot weather starts. The first thing that struck me when we first arrived on the beach was the gaily-colored striped canvas cabanas. I had never seen cabanas like that on the Jersey shore and thought it was such a neat and civilized idea, my own personal beach tent. Of course I had to rent one immediately and had trouble deciding which color to choose, finally choosing the chic understated dark and mint green stripe.
I ensconced myself in the cabana for the next several hours reading Jack Holmes and His Friend by Edmund White, an entertaining novel about my favorite era in New York, the 1960s.
We had leisurely lunches and dinners, mostly eating the delicious local mussels cooked in fresh Normandy cream, and frites.
Here are links to my other blogs about my first trip to Trouville in 2010.
