The 61,000¢ Billboard

Billboards made from unexpected materials really rev my engine. In my day job, I’m always try to apply some new material to vinyl or create the entire billboard out of a different substrate. That why I love, love, love this execution from Vancity, a credit union in Vancouver. Part of Vancity’s mission is to create positive social change in their community. This “change that counts” billboard is actually made of change that doesn’t count anymore, around 61,000 out-of-circulation pennies. The mosaic was created by painstakingly placing coins of different tarnish levels.

From the street, it looks like a cool mosaic image. But don’t discount the additional press Vancity gets because of the story they’re able to tell about their billboard. Just because something isn’t 100% obvious from street view doesn’t mean it isn’t worth doing.
