Industry groups push for 16% to 20% hikes
NYC - The city's Taxi and Limousine Commission will consider a fare hike for yellow cabs.
Taxi and Limousine Commission may raise fares as soon as this summer.
“The fare hasn’t changed since 2006, so it is reasonable for taxi drivers and fleet owners to put this on the table,” TLC chairman David Yassky said. “We will consider their petitions over the next couple of months.”
Fleet owners and driver reps have both petitioned the TLC for hikes.
“The industry has made a compelling case for an increase,” a source said.
Industry groups have asked for an increase of between 16% and 20%. The current average fare is $11.82 for an average 2.76-mile trip.
