July 2010

My first Seafire sighting, seen at 2010 Oshkosh Airventure.  The number of articulating bits on this aircraft are certainly impressive.  First flown in 1942, the Seafire was a naval version of the classic Spitfire adapted for operation from aircraft carriers.  With over 2,600 produced, the type saw action in European, African and Pacific theaters.  The Seafire was withdrawn from service during the 1950s after the Korean conflict and replaced by the newer Hawker Sea Fury.  This beautiful example is a Seafire F Mk XV, powered by a Griffon VI supercharged engine.  Note the strut forward of the tailwheel to guide arresting wires to the tailhook.  Nikon D300 w/18-200mm.
