We obviously can’t discuss anything today other than the Super Bowl (although the Puppy Bowl was a close second), so we thought we’d share some background about the most coveted statuette on earth today – the Vince Lombardi trophy. Tonight, the New England Patriots and the New York Giants will face off for a re-match of their last Super Bowl battle in 2008.
The 7lb trophy is made of fine Tiffany & Co. sterling silver and stands 22 inches tall with a regulation size football perched on top of the obelisk-shaped base. The trophy is made exclusively at Tiffany’s Parsippany workshop in New Jersey, and this year’s trophy took silversmiths four months to complete.
Tiffany & Co. has created the Vince Lombardi trophy since its inception. In 1967, over lunch with NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle, then VP of Tiffany Oscar Reidner sketched his vision for the championship trophy on a cocktail napkin.
Not until 1971, though, was it named the Vince Lombardi trophy for the renowned coach of the Greenbay Packers who died suddenly after a battle with cancer. It was awarded to the then Baltimore Colts in Superbowl V.
A new Lombardi Trophy is created each year, rather than passed from Super Bowl winner to winner like other championship trophies, so each winner retains their Lombardi trophies.
Both of today’s fearsome opponents have their own modest collection of Lombardi Trophies – three each, for every Super Bowl the respective teams have won. So while they start the day tied up for the Lombardi Trophy count, tonight one team will add another to their collection – who are you rooting for?
