Sunday Night Comfort Food

By Gail Aguiar @ImageLegacy

Conga Restaurante, Porto

Two Sundays a month, Paulo and I volunteer together at the same place where I volunteer during the week. I always feel very tired afterwards and that’s usually the time when I crave comfort food. I can’t even remember anymore what that would be in Canada — Thai? Indian? Persian? — but in Portugal that would be something like a torrada (buttered toast) or a spicy bifana, which is exactly what you see here.

Conga Restaurante in Porto has the spiciest bifanas (pork sandwiches) I’ve ever had, and it’s become my go-to place for bifanas and beer. Despite their long opening hours, the last two times I’ve tried to eat there the place has been completely full and I’ve had to take my bifana craving somewhere else. So, as you can imagine, when we got a table this time I was 100% committed to eating my share of the menu. I don’t usually order soup when it doesn’t already come with the meal, but I even ordered soup and dessert. And lo, all cravings ceased. A good way to close out a Sunday.
