Take a McDonalds Play Place, throw in a dose of punk, and add a splash of body paint. What do you get? Baltimore’s pop wunderkinds SUN CLUB of course! Getting noticed for their bombastic live performances and wild vocals, this five-piece has been touring circles around clubs all over the US, recently hitting up Shea Stadium. When I saw them at The Saint in Asbury Park, NJ last year, I asked them why their name was capitalized on the record. They responded, “Cause you’re supposed to shout it!”

Describing themselves as “endscene pop strawberry fusion circus dirty sunshine pop energetic”, SUN CLUB recently released a six track EP, Dad Claps at the Mom Prom. On it we get nonsensical track titles like “Repulsive on Chocolate”, “Cheeba Swiftkick” and “Beauty Meat”, the last of which is a clear standout. Although it opens the EP, it’s sure to be a show closer with an arm-in-arm, ohhh-oh-ohhh sing-along, a gut-punching kickdrum, and eight of your bestest drunkest friends.

“Spring Diamond” is another instant addiction for those who haven’t heard it on SUN CLUB’s first, self-titled album. The latest version is polished up, with the shouts removed from the intro and guitar riffs where you can hear every note. Although the world deserves a huge slice of this band, let’s hope that as they grow, they don’t lose the messy, gritty tonality and personality which is giving them a huge push into the limelight in the first place. See SUN CLUB and pick up their EP at Death By Audio tomorrow in Brooklyn.
