What is the secret to great style?

A woman who knows herself and is comfortable in herself will have a natural style which is unique to her and fully authentic. I think we develop our style as we get older, because we need that wealth of experience to learn to use clothing naturally, rather than as a costume.

What is the one thing you would spend a lot of money on?
I sew about 85% of my wardrobe so I’d say I spend a LOT on fabric! But I also will buy RTW winter coats, outdoor wear and sports equipment/gear. I don’t skimp on winter wear or outdoor sports clothing. I won’t spend a lot of money on RTW tees, trousers and blouses because I can easily make those. I also make my jackets, cardigans, and many of my accessories.

What are your top tips for looking stylish when travelling?
I travel in the winter with my husband and two terriers in a 27 foot travel trailer. We “dry camp” (no hookups) in the desert, and are far from towns. My go to outfits always include knit pants or slim fitting pants, a simple tunic or tee, and a warm jacket or cardigan. These pieces are usually solids or muted prints, and I then add in a colorful scarf, and comfy shoes or boots. Space is limited in the trailer so my wardrobe is mostly knit because it can be rolled up, and will be a base color with 2 other accent colors. Everything must work together, and be usable in camp and in town. I will also bring 1-2 loose sundresses, and hiking clothes.

What’s the secret to looking polished?
A good haircut in a style easy to maintain, minimal makeup with attention on skin and then either eyes or lips (but probably not both for day), and well- made clothes in a mix of neutrals with accessories lending color and flash.

Who inspires you?
Art inspires me, and then I look to pattern/fashion designers such as Marcy Tilton, Diane Erickson, Koos van den Akker. I also check out Eileen Fisher and Amalthee for ideas to add to my sewing.

What’s your secret to making yourself stand out?
For years my prematurely gray hair was my statement but as I have aged, it no longer is a surprising look. I now put together separates which are casual and easy to wear, but also add in a scarf or interesting jewelry to add some artistic flair.

My best accessory is my smile.

The one piece of advice most women need but don’t get?
As we age, we often stop dressing with pride and begin dressing to hide. I try to dress in order to celebrate my femininity and womanliness.

What’s the best piece of style wisdom you’ve ever received?
If my clothes are noticed before I am, I have made a mistake. I made a sundress two years ago which was zebra striped. The dress was a disaster and was worn one time.

What is your favorite current trend?
I love the looser styles after years of overly fitted and belly baring styles. I’m totally charmed by peplums right now.

What’s the worst current trend?
Heels which look like torture devices.

What are your favorite websites?
I check Pinterest daily for inspiration in my sewing and cooking, which is one of my other passions. I’m also a member of PatternReview, which is a treasure trove for those of us who sew garments. I love Flattering 50 and of course,Inside Out Style!

How would you describe your personal style?
Casual clothing to fit my active, casual life with an added spice of artistic flair.

Who are your style icons?
This is such a hard question for me to answer as I look at clothing from a seamstress’ point of view. I’m interested in what people wear but more interested in how I might translate an idea into my own wardrobe.
