I have this gorgeous double face wool reversible cashmere coat. I actually designed it when I was still working as a fashion designer. It's quite stunning, if I do say so myself. The piece never wound up being produced so I have the only sample style that I own. I don't have many photos of me wearing it, but you can get a glimpse of it in an old blog post. It's knee length and perfect for casual days where a blazer isn't enough and a coat is too much.
When we think of coats, we often think of winter coats, neglecting that window between hot and cold weather where it's mild. For some people, this window is huge and for others it's quite tiny, or never even happens at all. Double face is an excellent fabric to consider for a lightweight coat. Double face fabric means that the fabric has two faces (or right sides) and can be split apart at the edges and the fabric can be turned in on itself and stitched together to create a finished look. Often, coats made in this fabric can be reversible, but this ins't always the case. However, what this type of fabric does offer is a lightweight coat that doesn't need the extra bulk of lining, making them more lightweight.
The coat above from Theory is made of double face fabric. It looks crisp and tailored and is perfect for work and the weekends. I styled it with this silk boyfriend shirt, a skinny pair of pants from Lafayette 148 and accessorized the outfit with burgundy pumps from Charles David, Burberry scarf, grey Vince Camuto bag and tassel pendant from Ann Taylor.

This coat from Elie Tahari is also made of double face fabric. While it is lacking any closures, it still is a perfect layering piece for mild days. I styled this outfit more casually using this navy crew neck sweater from Reiss, a pair of skinny jeans from J. Crew and accessorized the outfit with these booties from Nordstrom, brown Sole Society bag, a pair of driving gloves from Fratelli Orsini, chronograph watch from Michael Kors and hoop earrings from The Sak.

Not all stylish lightweight coats need to be unlined or made of double face. This L.K. Bennett coat is lined but the coating fabric is more lightweight, making it perfect for transitional months. In the outfit above, I styled it with a deep olive dress from Reiss and accessorized it with Kate Spade pumps and Vince bag in warm grey, and pearl drop earrings from Julie Vos.
Even though it is super hot outside, this is the perfect time to start considering a coat like this for your wardrobe.
