Study Solutions for School Buses

The South Carolina House of Representatives is absolutely correct in putting off a radical change in state pubic school student transportation and instead calling for further study of an idea that would turn control of the South Carolina’s state-operated school buses to local districts.

The idea has the potential to be a significant and detrimental burden on the state’s local school districts, and the extent of the costs need to be fully understood before the Legislature acts on the proposal.

Gov. Nikki Haley proposed in her budget this year that the state move away from operating school transportation in South Carolina by giving control of those operations to local school districts. Haley wanted the change to take place by 2016, and her administration has said the move would save money for the state.
