Study Shows Chiropractic Can Reverse Aging

Chiropractic and AgingIn 2005, a landmark study published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation found evidence that chiropractic care can reduce oxidative stress in the body.

Oxidative stress is essentially an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the ability of the body to counteract or detoxify their harmful effects through neutralization by antioxidants.  Oxidative stress leads to many pathophysiological conditions in the body. Some of these include neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease, gene mutations and cancers, chronic fatigue syndrome, fragile X syndrome, heart and blood vessel disorders, atherosclerosis, heart failure, heart attack and inflammatory diseases.

The study published consisted of 76 participants: one group received short-term chiropractic care; a second group received long-term chiropractic care; and the third group received no chiropractic care.

The study qualified participants for age, sex and the use of nutritional supplements.  The study then measured the thiol levels in the participants.  Thiols are sulfur containing compounds in the body that act as antioxidants. They react with free radicals to neutralize them. Serum levels of thiols reflect DNA’s capacity to repair itself, report scientists of Biomedical Diagnostic Research, Inc, and can be used to measure aging and disease status. In a 2003 study published in the Journal of Anti Aging Medicine, low serum thiol levels were found in nine different categories of human sickness and disease.

What did the study reveal?  Healthy individuals that received chiropractic care for two or more years had higher serum thiol levels than those with disease. In fact, some of the chiropractic patients actually had serum thiol levels higher than what is associated with normal wellness.

A good case can be made that while aging is an inherently complex process, chiropractic care can help combat the physical, chemical and emotional stress that is the driving force behind it.
