According to People Magazine, the 67-year-old actor/comedian welcomed his 1st child with his 41-year-old wife.  The couple welcomed their child in December.  They managed to keep it quiet since then.  Steve Martin has often played a father in his movies.  He once said the best part of playing the movie-dad is that he gets the best parts of young children, yet doesn’t have to do the “dirty work.”  Now don’t get me wrong I wish them all the best.  I wish the baby good health.  My only question is at what age you say: “Hey I shouldn’t have any kids anymore?”

Having a child at 67 is incredibly selfish in my opinion.  He can say his wife really wanted a child, but that doesn’t deter the fact that he probably won’t be alive for much of the child’s life.  The average male-American lives to the ripe age of 78Is it really then fair to this now 11-year-old to potentially lose a parent?  Yes I know people can die at any age.  The fact remains you are more likely to die when you are in your 80s and 90s then when you are in your 20s and 30s.

As someone whose father died at the age of 11, I know first-hand how incredibly difficult it is to lose a parent.  I don’t think it is fair to this child.  There is a man in India who at 97 is the oldest man to father a child.  I remember a couple of years ago a women in her 70s had twins.  I think when you reach your 40s you should really stop having children.  Maybe in your early 50s, but I think that maybe pushing it.  I don’t think it’s fair that in some cases the first memory these children remember is their parent’s funeral.

What do you think?
